Thank you so much for your willingness to serve your son’s Troop by assisting with the Board of Review process this coming year. This is a great way to get to know the high caliber of the boys in Troop 416, to learn more about what your own son will encounter when he reaches each rank, and to keep the standards of Troop 416 high.
As promised, background information on the purpose and mechanics of a Board of Review, along with sample questions for each rank, are available under the main Board of Review tab. I find it useful to have them printed out and have them with me, so I can add good questions as I hear them and use them for reference.
When it is your turn to serve, I will call you, in advance, to make sure you will be available. Once we have Troopmaster in place, I will send you the dossiers of the Scouts you will interview (they will have confirmed their appointments with me), so you will know a little bit about them. I will also bring each Scout’s dossier with me as they sometimes do not transmit very well to all computers.
On the afternoon of the Board of Review, look for me at the Troop Meeting. Once all Board Members have arrived, we will find a vacant spot where we will meet for a bit of orientation and strategy before we ask for our first candidate. After each Scout’s interview is completed, we will discuss their review with the other members of the Board to determine if the rank should be awarded. If so, we will invite the Scout back for congratulations. If not, it will be important to have a list of what the boy needs to do to be able to return for a successful Board. When the Scout returns we will discuss these findings with him. This list will be given to me to discuss with the Scoutmaster, so he can properly guide the Scout in the weeks and months to come.
At the end of the afternoon, we will meet once more as a group to discuss our findings, sign all paperwork, and decide if any information needs to be transmitted to the Scoutmaster, the PLC, or the Troop Committee. Our work should be completed by the end of the Troop Meeting.
Again, thank you for assuming your role as a mentor in the lives of these wonderful young men. Your work on the Boards will help to strengthen each boy and thereby enhance the Scouting experience for each of our sons.
If you have questions or concerns, please let us know.
